Edathua Church / dathua Pally

The St. George Syro-Malabar Catholic Forane Church (popularly known as Edathua Pally or Edathua Valiapally) is one of the most prominent and historically significant Christian pilgrim centers in South India. Located on the scenic banks of the Pamba River in the Kuttanad region of Alappuzha, the church is renowned for its grand European-inspired architecture and the miraculous healing powers attributed to its patron saint, St. George (Geevarghese Sahada).

Historical Background

The history of the Edathua Church reflects the growth of the Christian community in the backwater plains of Kuttanad:

Ancient Roots and Migration: Before the church was established, the faithful of the Edathua region traveled to ancient spiritual centers like the Niranam Church (founded by St. Thomas the Apostle) or the Champakulam Church (established in 427 AD) for worship. During the Chempakassery royal regime of Ambalapuzha, a large number of Christian families migrated to the fertile Kuttanad region, driving the need for a local parish.

Establishment (1810): The foundation stone of the initial church was laid on September 29, 1810, on the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel, with canonical consent from the Varapuzha Vicariate. It originally started as an extension of the Champakulam parish.

Construction of the Present Structure (1839): As the number of pilgrims grew rapidly, the construction of the current, magnificent monument began on November 15, 1839. The grand Madbaha (sanctuary/altar) was completed and blessed in 1861.

The Patron Saint: The church is dedicated to St. George, a 3rd-century Roman soldier from Palestine who was martyred for refusing to renounce his Christian faith under Emperor Diocletian. The iconic statue of St. George kept in the church features distinct Persian-influenced artistic details.

Architectural Highlights

The church building stands out dramatically against the flat, watery landscapes of Kuttanad, bearing a striking resemblance to the massive medieval churches of Europe.

Design: It is built in a grand European Gothic architectural style featuring towering arches and a sprawling facade.

The Sanctuary Art: The ceiling of the Altar and the sanctuary are intricately painted with beautiful biblical scenes depicting the crowning of the Holy Mother in Heaven, alongside arrays of prophets, angels, and ancient saints.

Heritage Archives: The church houses a rich collection of centuries-old artifacts, including a massive golden cross and a silver cross dating back to 1888, ancient bronze replicas, and over 30 rare historic texts written in old Syriac and Malayalam script on palm leaves (Thaliyola).
