Alappuzha Houseboat Terminal / Alappuzha Finishing Point

While Alappuzha Beach embodies the ocean-faring history of the region, Finishing Point represents the vibrant soul of Kerala’s backwater culture. Located on the edge of the sprawling Punnamada Lake, it is world-renowned as the grand finale site for the legendary Nehru Trophy Boat Race and serves as the primary hub for the region’s famous houseboats.

The Historical Legacy of Finishing Point

The history and global fame of Finishing Point are fundamentally tied to a single, historic day: December 22, 1952.

During his first official visit to Kerala, India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, traveled from Kottayam to Alappuzha by boat through the waterlogged Kuttanad region. To honor his arrival, the local administration and the people of Kuttanad organized an impromptu exhibition race of Chundan Vallams (Snake Boats).

Nehru watched from a specially constructed pavilion right at this endpoint. The sheer power, rhythm, and thundering speed of the oarsmen singing Vanchipattu (traditional boat songs) filled him with such excitement that he famously bypassed his security detail and leapt onto the winning snake boat, Nadubhagam Chundan, dancing along with the rowers.

Upon returning to New Delhi, deeply moved by the communal harmony and competitive spirit of the event, Nehru sent back a silver trophy—a replica of a snake boat mounted on a wooden abacus—bearing his signature. That historic finish line permanently transformed a quiet canal junction into Finishing Point, the official home of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race (NTBR), which has been fiercely contested this year boat race on twenty second saturday ( 22-8-2026 ) of August .
