Ozar

Ozar

Ozar (also spelled Ozhar), situated on the scenic banks of the Kukadi River in the Pune district of Maharashtra, holds immense religious and historical importance. It is home to the Vighneshwar Temple, which is recognized as the seventh temple in the sacred Ashtavinayak circuit—the eight self-manifested (Swayambhu) shrines of Lord Ganesha across Maharashtra.

Historical & Mythological Legends

1. The Mythological Defeat of Vighnasura

According to the Ganesha Purana, an ancient king named Abhinandana performed a massive prayer ritual without offering a share to Indra, the king of gods. Furious, Indra created a fierce demon named Vighnasura (the demon of obstacles) to destroy the ritual. The demon went a step further, wrecking religious ceremonies across earth and heaven.

In desperation, humanity prayed to Lord Ganesha. Ganesha defeated the demon, who then fell to his feet and begged for mercy. Ganesha spared his life on the condition that he never enter places where Ganesha is worshipped. The demon requested that Ganesha append his name to the deity’s own—thus, the Lord at Ozar became known as Vighneshwar (Lord of Obstacles).

2. Fortified Peshwa Architecture & Gold Spire (17th–18th Century)

While the site’s spiritual origins are ancient, the structured temple standing today showcases classic 18th-century Maratha architecture.

  • The Peshwa Rebuild: In 1785 CE, Chimaji Appa, the famous military commander and brother of Peshwa Bajirao I, completely renovated and expanded the stone temple after successfully defeating the Portuguese at the Battle of Vasai.
  • Golden Accents: As an act of gratitude to Lord Ganesha, Chimaji Appa covered the main temple spire (Shikhara) in shimmering gold sheets.

3. Fortified Protective Design

Because the temple was built during a highly volatile period of regional warfare, it was constructed like a small fortress. The entire temple is enclosed by massive, high stone walls and features a spacious courtyard. Two large stone lamp towers (Deepmalas) stand proudly near the entrance to light up the complex during night festivals.
