Ernakulam Railway station ( Junction)
Ernakulam Junction (commonly known as Ernakulam South, Station Code: ERS) is one of the busiest and highest-revenue-yielding railway stations in Kerala. The station is undergoing a massive, ₹380-crore structural transformation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to offer airport-like facilities.
🏗️ Core Infrastructure & Passenger Facilities
1. Station Layout & Ongoing Redevelopment (Amrit Bharat Project)
- Dual Multi-Storey Terminals: A multi-floor West Terminal (Main entrance) and an expanded East Terminal (Kathrikadavu/Manorama side) are being constructed to ensure seamless entry from both sides of the city, eliminating bottleneck crowds. The project is targeted for full completion by early 2028.
- Air Concourse: A massive elevated central concourse will span across the platforms, segregating arriving and departing passengers smoothly.
- Multi-Level Car Parking (MLCP): Dedicated MLCP structures are under construction at both terminals to accommodate hundreds of two-wheelers and four-wheelers.
2. Waiting Lounges & Amenity Blocks
- New Executive AC Waiting Lounge: Opened on the northern end of Platform 1, this 160 sq. ft. lounge costs just ₹30 per hour and accepts any valid train, general, or platform ticket. It features:
100 airport-style push-back cushion seats with dedicated mobile charging points.
Free high-speed Wi-Fi, air purifiers, a mini-library, and a cafeteria.
Modern restroom blocks, including disabled-friendly toilets and a private feeding room for mo hers.
- Retiring Rooms: Traditional AC and Non-AC retiring rooms and dormitory beds are available on the upper floors of the main building for long transits.
3. Platforms & Inter-connectivity
- Platform Network: Features 6 active operational platforms handling premium trains like Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and numerous express/passenger fleets.
- Accessibility: Equipped with lifts, escalators, and foot-over-bridges (FOBs) connecting all platforms.
Island Platform Glass Cubicles: The station is slated to receive quick-transit AC glass cubicles on its island platforms, complete with mini-theatres to watch trailers while waiting for delayed trains.
4. Multimodal Transport Integration
- Metro Link: The station features direct Skywalk connectivity linking the railway platform ecosystem straight to the Ernakulam South Metro Station, meaning you can change from rail to metro without walking out onto the main road.
Bus & Auto Hubs: Prepaid auto stands operate 24/7 at the main entrance, and the city bus network is easily accessible from both the KSRTC stand nearby and the Manorama bus stop right outside the East Terminal.
