Kochi Metro
The Kochi Metro, operated by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), is celebrated as one of India’s most modern, socially inclusive, and environmentally friendly rapid transit systems. Spanning from Aluva to Tripunithura, it seamlessly integrates with the city’s bus and pioneering Water Metro networks to form a unified urban mobility system.
βποΈ Core Infrastructure & Facilities
β1. Route Layout & Active Extensions
- βPhase 1 (Operational): A fully elevated, 28.1 km standard-gauge line featuring 25 active stations stretching from Aluva to Thrippunithura Terminal.
- Phase 2 / The Pink Line (Under Construction): A highly anticipated 11.2 km extension that branches from JLN Stadium to Kakkanad, connecting directly to the massive IT clusters at Infopark, KINFRA, and SmartCity. Piling and superstructure works are underway, with full corridor commissioning scheduled for mid-2027.
- Phase 3 (Planned): An extension designed to bridge Aluva directly to the Cochin International Airport (CIAL).
2. High-Tech Transit Features
- βThird Rail Electrification: Kochi Metro runs on a 750V DC third-rail system. This eliminates clutter overhead, as power is drawn from a rail running along the tracks, giving the viaduct corridors a clean aesthetic look.
- The Kochi1 Smart Card: Serving as a unified transit card, the Kochi1 Card can be tapped interchangeably on Metro trains, feeder buses, and the Kochi Water Metro network.
- βPaperless Ticketing: Passengers can easily generate QR-code based tickets via the Kochi1 mobile app, WhatsApp, or through automatic ticketing kiosks at stations.
β3. Station Amenities & Accessibility
- βThemed Station Interiors: In a tribute to the stateβs heritage, every single station has a unique aesthetic theme, showcasing local elements like Western Ghats flora, spices, traditional boat races, and history.
- Divyangjan & Child-Friendly: Fully equipped with tactile paths, auditory signals, low-height ticketing counters, smooth elevator ramps, and dedicated wheelchair brackets inside train coaches.
- βFree Wi-Fi: Fast, complimentary public Wi-Fi is actively provided to commuters inside train coaches and station waiting lobbies.
4. Eco-Green & Social Innovations
- βSolar Powered: Over 50% of the metro’s total energy footprint is sourced from dedicated solar arrays installed on station roofs and at the Muttom maintenance yard.
- βVertical Gardens: Every sixth metro pillar along the highway features a lush vertical garden watered using harvested rainwater.
- βEmpowered Workforce: Kochi Metro is globally praised for its progressive social model, with operations, hospitality, ticketing, and security managed largely by members of the Kudumbashree women’s self-help group and transgender professionals.
