Alappuzha Houseboat

Alappuzha Houseboat

The floating villas of Alappuzha (Alleppey) are engineered marvels that combine centuries-old traditional Kerala boat-building techniques with modern, eco-friendly luxury.

1. Houseboat Infrastructure & Structural Facilities
🪵 Hull & Superstructure (The Traditional “Kettuvallam” Build)
Eco-Friendly Framing: Constructed using local materials like Anjili wood (wild jackwood), bamboo poles, coir ropes, and woven coconut palm leaves.
No Nails Construction: Traditional houseboats are held together entirely by tight coir knots and sealed with black caustic resin extracted from boiled cashew shells—making them exceptionally durable and naturally buoyant.
Decks & Passages: Standard layouts feature a wide-open front deck (lounge/sitting area), private cabins with attached bathrooms, a passage corridor (minimum 3 feet wide), and an onboard kitchen at the rear.

🚽 Eco-Friendly Waste & Sewage Systems
Biotech Toilets: Modern houseboats are mandated to use scientifically designed, closed-loop bio-toilets or septic collection tanks. No waste is ever flushed directly into the water.

Onboard Holding Tanks: Sewage is retained in secure holding tanks (ranging from 150L to 2400L depending on boat capacity) and periodically pumped out at designated septage treatment facilities (such as the DTPC sewage plants).

Solid Waste Management: Biodegradable waste is sorted, while non-biodegradable materials (like plastics) are collected and brought back to land for safe disposal.
⚡ Power, Climate Control & Water Supply
Electricity & Generators: 24-hour electricity is powered by high-capacity, soundproof diesel generators.
Solar Hybrid Systems: Premium class boats utilize rooftop solar panels for eco-friendly heating, corridor lighting, and fans to reduce carbon emissions.
Water Management: The vessel carries clean, fresh water tanks for showering and washing. Water purifiers (RO/UV) are standard in kitchens to ensure safe, hot/cold drinking water for guests.
🦺 Safety & Navigation Gear
Life-Saving Equipment: Fully stocked with life jackets and lifebuoys mapped to passenger capacity (minimum 2 to 5 per boat, scaling up by room size).
Fire Safety: Kitchens are lined with fire-proof paneling and equipped with at least two high-grade fire extinguishers, plus additional units near the engine room.
Tracking systems: Integrated GPS systems and one-touch SOS alarms connected directly to the local marine patrol and District Tourism authorities.

FAQs

How does the Air Conditioning (AC) work on the boat?
Deluxe/Budget Tier: AC is strictly operational in the bedrooms only during the night, typically from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Premium/Luxury Tier: Full-time (24-hour) AC is available in both the bedrooms and enclosed glass lounge areas.
Why do houseboats stop cruising and anchor at 5:30 PM?
By strict Kerala government maritime regulations, all houseboats must safely anchor by 5:30 PM and cannot resume sailing until 8:00 AM the next morning. This restriction ensures local fishermen can lay down their fishing nets ("Kanni") in the lake overnight without them being destroyed by boat propellers.
What is the typical cruise timeline?
Day 1 (12:00 PM): Check-in and start cruising. Day 1 (1:30 PM – 2:30 PM): Anchor for a traditional Kerala lunch onboard. Day 1 (5:30 PM): Stop and anchor at a scenic riverside location for the night. Day 2 (8:00 AM – 9:00 AM): Morning cruise with breakfast. Day 2 (9:00 AM): Checkout at the jetty.
What kind of food is served, and can guests cook?
Guests are not permitted to cook or use the onboard kitchen for safety and fire prevention. Your personal chef prepares a classic, fixed menu of authentic Kerala cuisine (like Karimeen Pollichathu, local rice, Sambhar, and chicken curry). Vegetarian, vegan, or custom dietary requests must be arranged with the booking office in advance.
Is it safe for families and children? Can we swim in the lake?
Staying overnight is extremely safe. Boats are fully staffed with a minimum of three crew members: a Captain, an Engine Driver, and a private Chef. All crew members are trained in safety protocols and are skilled swimmers. However, swimming directly in the lake from the houseboat is strictly prohibited due to deep currents, under-surface mud, and boat traffic hazards.
