Tour In India
India’s Tourism Infrastructure & Facilities
To transform India into a premier global travel destination, the Indian Government and the private sector have focused heavily on connectivity-led infrastructure, safety, and digital transformation.
1. Connectivity & Transportation
- Air Travel: Massive expansions under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme have connected tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Over 150 airports have been developed or upgraded. DigiYatra, a paperless, biometric-based boarding system using facial recognition, has drastically reduced airport security wait times.
- Rail Network: The introduction of semi-high-speed, modern Vande Bharat Express trains has revolutionized medium-distance travel. Railway stations across the country are undergoing massive redevelopments under the “Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.”
- Highways and Roads: The national highway network has expanded significantly (adding approximately 145,000 kilometers over the last decade), drastically improving road-trip connectivity to remote destinations and tourist spots.
2. Destination Development Schemes
- Swadesh Darshan 2.0: Focuses on the sustainable, theme-based development of tourist circuits (e.g., coastal, Buddhist, desert, spiritual, wild, and heritage circuits) to offer immersive traveler experiences.
- PRASHAD Scheme: Targets the comprehensive development and rejuvenation of key pilgrimage and spiritual destinations to improve basic tourist amenities like clean drinking water, waiting rooms, walkways, and tourist facilitation centers.
- Challenge-Based Destination Development: A landmark initiative to develop selected tourist destinations in partnership with states to ensure world-class facilities and connectivity.
3. Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) & Tech
- Unified Payments Interface (UPI): Enables instantaneous, contactless digital payments via QR codes at almost all shops, taxis, and entry gates.
- NIDHI & NIDHI Plus Platforms: A digital gateway that registers and lists hospitality units and travel agents to standardize and verify quality services.
4. Safety & Traveler Support
-
- 24×7 Multi-Lingual Tourist Helpline: The Ministry of Tourism provides a toll-free helpline operating in 12 languages (including English and Hindi) for guidance, information, and assistance. Toll-Free Helpline: 1800-111-363 or shortcode 1363.
