​For Indian Residents: You need a valid Indian Driving License (usually held for at least 6–12 months), an Aadhaar Card or Passport, and you must be at least 21 years old (some luxury segments require you to be 23 or 25). ​For International Travelers: You must present your original home-country driving license, a valid Passport with visa, and an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Choose Self-Drive if: You love driving, are traveling to rural/scenic areas with open roads (like the hills of Munnar or the coastal roads of Goa), and want total privacy. ​Choose Chauffeur-Driven if: You are navigating major metro cities (like Mumbai, Delhi, or Bangalore) where traffic is dense and parking is a nightmare. It is highly recommended for international tourists who are not used to India's unique, fast-paced driving conditions.

Most self-drive companies offer two options: ​Full-to-Full: The car is delivered with a full tank, and you must return it with a full tank. ​Excluding Fuel: The car comes with minimal fuel. You pay for whatever you fill, and you are not refunded for any leftover fuel when you return it. Always double-check your booking terms!

India is divided into multiple states, and commercial rental vehicles must pay a State Entry Tax when crossing borders. ​If you are driving a self-drive car, you will need to stop at the border RTO (Regional Transport Office) booth and pay a nominal permit fee. ​If you hire a car with a driver, this tax is often bundled into your final bill or paid directly by the driver (clarify this during booking).
