Chikmagalur

Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka, standing at an impressive elevation of 1,930 meters (approximately 6,330 feet) above sea level. It is a legendary trekking destination offering sweeping panoramic views of the Western Ghats. The peak gets its name from a small temple dedicated to Mullappa Swamy, an ancient sage who used to meditate inside a cave at the summit.

Located in the Baba Budan Giri hills, this is a highly unique cave shrine that stands as a powerful symbol of communitarian harmony. It is deeply revered by both Hindus and Muslims. ​Hindus worship the site as the seat of Guru Dattatreya (an incarnation of the trinity Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva). ​Muslims revere it as the resting place and hermitage of Hazrat Dada Hayat Mir Qalandar (the Sufi saint Baba Budan). For centuries, the shrine has been managed by both communities.

The hills of Chikmagalur are home to the rare Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana) shrubs. These unique flowers bloom only once every 12 years. When the blooming cycle hits, entire mountain ranges across Baba Budan Giri turn into a surreal, breathtaking carpet of vibrant violet-blue flowers.

Chikmagalur excels at producing both major commercial varieties: ​Arabica: Grown at higher altitudes (1,000 to 1,500 meters), it is known for its mild, delicate flavor profile with aromatic, slightly acidic notes. ​Robusta: Grown at lower altitudes (500 to 1,000 meters), it has a much stronger, bold, and bitter taste with double the caffeine content, making it perfect for traditional South Indian filter coffee blends.
