Kabini and Nagarahole

They are the same national park! Nagarahole generally refers to the northern and eastern forest zones (accessed usually from Coorg or Hunsur). Kabini refers specifically to the southwestern pocket centered around the vast reservoir backwaters of the Kabini River.

Kabini is incredibly unique for two reasons: ​The Elephant Congregation: During the scorching summer months (March to May), the drying backwaters expose fresh grass, drawing 600 to 800 Asian elephants together. It is the largest natural gathering of Asian elephants in the world. The Elusive Black Panther: Kabini is one of the incredibly rare places on earth where a melanistic leopard (a black panther named "Saya") lives and has been regularly sighted, making it a legendary photography hub.

Safaris are strictly regulated by the Karnataka Forest Department. ​Nagarahole Side: Offers Forest Department-managed Bus Safaris and limited Jeep Safaris bookable via the official Nagarahole Tiger Reserve website. ​Kabini Side: Safaris are run via Jungle Lodges & Resorts (JLR) and their tied-up luxury properties, offering both custom Jeep Safaris and magical Boat Safaris on the river.

For general comfort and birdwatching: October to February offers lush, beautiful post-monsoon greenery and cool weather (15°C–30°C). ​For big cat and elephant sightings: March to May (Summer). The drying vegetation pushes animals out of the thick brush toward the permanent water sources and riverbanks, making predators much easier to spot.
