1. Top-Tier Houseboat Infrastructure & Facilities

🪵 Master-Crafted “Kettuvallam” Superstructure

  • Zero-Nail Hull Engineering: The hulls of the finest houseboats are constructed using local Anjili wood (wild jackwood) planks. These are stitched together tightly with organic coir rope and sealed using a boiled black resin extracted from cashew nut shells. This centuries-old traditional method provides supreme flexibility and natural buoyancy.
  • Climate-Controlled Glass Lounges: The signature feature of modern premium boats is a seamless, 3/4th glass-enclosed dining and living lounge. This allows you to enjoy the stunning backwater views in full, climate-controlled comfort without humidity, heat, or seasonal insects.
  • Sun Decks & Upper Decks: Top-tier boats often feature magnificent upper observation decks or open-air sun decks perfect for photography, sunset viewing, or private dining.

⚡ Power, Climate, and Water Systems

  • Soundproof Dual Generators: Luxury houseboats carry dual, heavily insulated marine diesel generators to ensure uninterrupted electricity and quiet operation.
  • Eco-Friendly Solar Offsets: Sustainable luxury fleets (like Xandari Riverscapes or Spice Routes) incorporate solar arrays on their roofs to power daytime lighting, cabin fans, and water heaters.
  • RO/UV Water Purification: In addition to clean fresh-water storage tanks, modern kitchens are equipped with advanced Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Ultraviolet (UV) water purifiers.

🚽 Environmental & Waste Infrastructure

  • Biological Toilet Systems: To protect the fragile Vembanad Lake ecosystem, elite houseboats use closed-loop bio-toilets. Blackwater is safely retained in holding tanks and pumped out only at designated shore-based septage treatment facilities.
  • Zero-Plastic Policies: High-end cruises strictly replace single-use plastics with glass bottles, paper straws, and biodegradable toiletries packaged in reusable cloth pouches.

🦺 Certified Safety Features

  • Life-Saving Equipment: The vessels are fully equipped with commercial-grade life jackets and lifebuoys mapped to maximum capacity.
  • Fire Suppression: Cooking areas feature fire-retardant panels and are stocked with multiple ABC-type fire extinguishers.
  • GPS Tracking: Many premium boats carry integrated GPS tracking units and distress call (SOS) transponders linked to the local marine patrol.

FAQs

What is the differences between Deluxe, Premium, and Luxury houseboats?
Deluxe: Features standard interiors. Air conditioning (AC) in the bedrooms operates only during the night (usually from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM). Premium: Upgraded interiors, glass-walled common lounges. Air conditioning is operational on a flexible/extended schedule. Luxury / Ultra-Luxury: Features five-star resort-like wooden interiors, a highly diverse gourmet menu, and 24-hour centralized AC running seamlessly across bedrooms and living spaces.
Why do the houseboats stop cruising at 5:30 PM?
By Kerala government maritime law, all houseboats must drop anchor and stop cruising by 5:30 PM. This is a safety measure to prevent boat propellers from cutting or getting tangled in the underwater fishing nets ("Kanni") laid out by local fishermen in the evening. Cruising safely resumes at 8:00 AM the next morning.
What does the standard overnight meal plan include?
Most bookings are on an APAI (All Meals Included) basis. Your private chef serves: Welcome Drink: Fresh tender coconut water or fruit juice. Lunch: Traditional Kerala meal (Matta rice, local vegetable dishes, sambar, and fresh-caught Karimeen/Pearl Spot fish fry) and Sea fish curry. Evening Snacks: Hot tea/coffee served with banana fritters (pazham pori) or local pakodas or Kerala traditional snacks ( banana leaf ada ). Dinner: A mix of North/South Indian dishes (chapati, chicken curry, Paneer masala, rice, and vegetable dishes). Breakfast: Traditional Kerala breakfast (Idli, Dosa, or Appam) or putte kadala curry ( steam cake with chana masala) Or continental options.
Can we request custom food, and can we cook ourselves?
For fire safety and hygiene, guests are not allowed to cook in the kitchen. However, your private chef can easily customize the spices, prepare vegetarian/Jain meals, or cook fresh seafood (like local prawns or mud crabs) that you buy directly from local fishermen during the cruise.
Is it safe for children, and can we swim in the lake?
Houseboats are highly child-friendly and carry safety gear, first-aid kits, and secure railings. However, swimming in the lake is strictly prohibited due to deep undercurrents, water traffic, and hidden underwater roots.
