Chidambaram

Chidambaram

Chidambaram is an extraordinary temple town located in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. The city’s name itself tells a story: Chit means “consciousness” and Ambaram means “sky” or “atmosphere”—translating to the “sky of consciousness.”
Unlike most Shiva temples where the deity is worshipped as a stone lingam, Chidambaram celebrates Shiva in his cosmic dance form as Lord Nataraja.

FAQs

What is unique about the deity at Chidambaram?
Most traditional Shiva temples house a stone Lingam in a dark, cave-like room. Chidambaram is entirely unique for three reasons: The primary deity is an anthropomorphic (human form) bronze sculpture of Shiva dancing as Nataraja. It simultaneously represents Shiva in three states: Rupa (the physical form of the Nataraja icon), Rupa-Arupa (a crystal lingam kept for daily rituals), and Arupa (the formless empty space of the Chidambaram Rahasya). It is one of the few ancient holy sites where a major Shiva shrine and a major Vishnu shrine (Govindaraja Perumal Temple) sit directly next to each other within the same outer courtyard walls.
What is the dress code for entering the Nataraja Temple?
The temple management follows strict traditional clothing rules: Women: Must wear traditional sarees, half-sarees, or salwar kameez. Outfits like shorts, short skirts, or western casuals are not permitted. Men: Formal trousers and shirts, or traditional dhotis/veshtis. Important Note: To step onto the raised stone platform (Kanaka Sabha) directly in front of the golden sanctum for close darshan, men are strictly required to remove their shirts and vests.
