Cochin International Airport (CIAL)
Cochin International Airport (CIAL) holds a unique spot in aviation history as India’s first airport built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, and it is globally celebrated as the world’s first fully solar-powered airport.
Operating under its “Flying into Tomorrow” and “CIAL 2.0” blueprints, the airport has undergone massive expansion to handle over 10 million passengers annually.
🏗️ Core Infrastructure & Passenger Facilities
1. Terminal Infrastructure
- Terminal 1 (Domestic): A sprawling 6-lakh sq. ft. terminal showcasing traditional Kerala architecture, equipped with modern check-in counters and baggage systems. An ongoing expansion is adding another 1.8 lakh sq. ft. to manage surging domestic footfall.
- Terminal 3 (International): The airport’s flagship international facility. A massive ₹700-crore infrastructure upgrade is expanding the terminal by 5 lakh sq. ft., taking the total aircraft parking bays to 44 and adding 8 new aerobridges to minimize bus transfers.
- Business Jet Terminal: An elegant, dedicated terminal tailored for boutique luxury travel, charter flights, and medical evacuations.
2. Premium Transits & Commercial Zones
- 0484 Luxury Aero Lounge: Spanning a massive 50,000 sq. ft., this is India’s largest airport lounge facility. It bridges the domestic, international, and business terminals, offering 42 luxury short-stay rooms, workspaces, a spa, and restaurants.

3. Cargo, Logistics & Maintenance
- Import Cargo Terminal: A massive 80,000 sq. ft. facility that handles an annual volume of up to 2 lakh metric tonnes, solidifying Kochi as a primary export-import hub for Southern India. It also features a dedicated Animal Quarantine Facility.
- MRO Facilities: An extensive Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hangar complex that provides aircraft upkeep services for domestic and international carriers.
4. Eco-Infrastructure & Advanced Tech
- 100% Green Energy: Supported by a massive 50 MW solar plant grid and a hydro-power plant, the airport generates more than enough electricity to run its daily operations entirely on renewables.
- World’s First Airport Green Hydrogen Plant: Partnering with BPCL, CIAL has constructed a 1 MW green hydrogen plant on-site to fuel its internal airside utility vehicles and zero-emission buses.
- CIAL 2.0 Digitization: The terminal relies on in-house developed DigiYatra facial-recognition software for paperless boarding, alongside 4,000 AI-enabled surveillance cameras and full-body security scanners.
