Ernakulam Town Railway Station (commonly known by locals as Ernakulam North, Station Code: ERN) is an essential NSG-3 category ‘A-grade’ railway station in Kochi. Serving as the central transit point for all trains passing through the Kottayam route, the station manages a massive annual passenger footfall of over 1 crore commuters.

The station is undergoing a extensive ₹150-crore comprehensive modernization under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

​1. Terminal Upgrades & Amrit Bharat Redevelopment

​The station is undergoing structural transformation, executed in distinct phases to ensure passenger operations are not disrupted:

 

  • Three-Storey West Terminal (Main Entry): Work on the main structural framework for the new, modern West Terminal building is heavily underway. The new hub will offer integrated waiting complexes, commercial retail blocks, and dynamic passenger routing. The entire redeveloped complex is scheduled for commission by December 2027.
  • ​Multi-Level Car Parking (MLCP): To resolve the long-standing traffic and parking constraints around the Kacheripady/North side, an MLCP facility built specifically to fit over 200 cars is nearing structural completion.
  • ​12-Meter-Wide Foot Overbridge (FOB): Foundation works are complete and fabrication is underway for a wide central FOB to bridge platforms comfortably.

​2. Platforms & Operational Layout

  • ​Tracks & Platforms: Unlike the sprawling layout of the South station, the North station operates a tight, highly efficient setup with 2 main platforms and 4 tracks. It accommodates around 90 major express and passenger trains daily.
  • Dual Entry Access: Features a primary western entrance near Kacheripady and a secondary eastern entrance opening onto SRM Road. Both sides are currently being re-engineered to facilitate smooth, barrier-free access.

3. Special Amenities & Accessibility

  • ​Inclusivity & Comfort: The newly deployed layouts explicitly integrate dedicated feeding rooms for lactating mothers, a Child Help Line kiosk, and upgraded toilet blocks distributed across both entries.
  • Divyangjan Friendly: Retaining full accessibility standards, the station features dedicated platform ramps, tactile paths, and upcoming lift/escalator networks integrated into the new FOB structure.

4. Multimodal Transport Connections

  • ​Kochi Metro Integration: The station features exceptionally close proximity to the Kochi Metro network. The Town Hall Metro Station (formerly Lissie Metro Station) is situated just 300 meters from the station’s eastern entrance. A dedicated skywalk corridor is planned to safely link the station directly to the Banerji Road Overbridge for streamlined bus access.
  • Local Bus Links: The Kaloor Private Bus Stand is located nearby, and city buses connecting to MG Road, Menaka, and Fort Kochi stop on both sides of the North Overbridge.

However, because of the massive physical restructuring of the old buildings for the Amrit Bharat project, certain parcel and storage facilities are operating from temporary relocated cabins.
