Jatayu Earth’s Center / Chadayamangalam

Historical & Mythological Context of Jatayu Earth’s Center
Located in Chadayamangalam (Kollam district, Kerala), Jatayu Earth’s Center holds deep ties to the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana.
The Mythological Legend: According to the epic, the noble demi-god giant eagle Jatayu witnessed the demon king Ravana abducting Goddess Sita to Lanka on his flying chariot (Pushpaka Vimana). In a valiant attempt to protect her honor and rescue her, Jatayu fought Ravana fiercely. However, Ravana used his powerful sword to sever one of Jatayu’s wings. Mortally wounded, Jatayu fell onto a massive rocky peak in this village. He held onto his life just long enough to inform Lord Rama of the direction Ravana had taken, earning Moksha (salvation) from Rama before passing away.
The Name Evolution: The rocky peak where he fell became known as Jatayupara (Jatayu Rock). Over time, the surrounding village Jatayumangalam evolved into the modern name Chadayamangalam.

Modern Significance: The world-largest bird sculpture, envisioned and created by acclaimed sculptor and filmmaker Rajiv Anchal, covers 65 acres. It stands not only as a marvel of modern architecture but is officially dedicated to “Women’s Safety and Honor” in tribute to Jatayu’s sacrifice to protect a woman.
