🏗️ Core Infrastructure Facilities & Megaprojects
1. Aviation: The Changi East & Terminal 5 Mega-Development
Singapore’s flagship aviation hub is scaling up through the massive Changi East project:
- Terminal 5 (T5): Ground broke on this mega-terminal in 2025. Designed to handle an astounding 50 million passenger movements annually by the mid-2030s, it will be fully sustainable. Powered partly by a massive rooftop solar array, T5 is engineered to handle a fully electric airside fleet (baggage tractors, vehicles).
- Remote Satellite Gates: In 2026, Changi Airport Group began deploying advanced satellite gates with off-grid battery systems and solar roofing to seamlessly buffer rising flight volumes ahead of T5’s opening.
- Three-Runway System: The airport is transitioning to a three-runway system by extending a military runway to 4km for commercial aircraft to increase takeoff/landing efficiency.
2. Maritime: Tuas Port
Singapore is consolidating all its container port activities into a single, hyper-modern location at Tuas Port.
- Scale: Once fully completed in the 2040s, it will be the world’s largest fully automated container terminal, capable of handling 65 million TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) of cargo annually.
- Automation: The port utilizes automated guided vehicles (AGVs), unmanned yard cranes, and smart AI-driven scheduling to maximize efficiency and operate 24/7.
3. Land Transit: MRT Expansion & Cross-Border Rail
Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network is expanding rapidly to reduce dependencies on private vehicles:
- Cross Island Line (CRL): The longest fully underground line in Singapore (over 50km). Phase 1, stretching from Aviation Park to Bright Hill, is actively under construction and on track to open in 2030. The first physical trainsets arrived in Singapore for testing at the Tuas Rail Test Centre.
- RTS Link to Malaysia: A high-speed, 4km rapid transit link designed to connect Singapore (Woodlands North) directly to Johor Bahru (Bukit Chagar). It features a co-located customs check to clear passengers in a single stop.
4. Smart Urban Districts
- Jurong Lake District (JLD): Positioned as Singapore’s second Central Business District, built around sustainability, car-lite zones, and high-density green spaces.
- Punggol Digital District (PDD): Singapore’s premier hub for cybersecurity and smart technologies, integrating university campuses with business parks using a central, smart district management system to regulate energy and waste.
