​1. Connectivity & Transportation

2. Destination Development Schemes

  • ​Swadesh Darshan 2.0: Focuses on the sustainable, theme-based development of tourist circuits (e.g., coastal, Buddhist, desert, spiritual, wild, and heritage circuits) to offer immersive traveler experiences.
  • PRASHAD Scheme: Targets the comprehensive development and rejuvenation of key pilgrimage and spiritual destinations to improve basic tourist amenities like clean drinking water, waiting rooms, walkways, and tourist facilitation centers.
  • Challenge-Based Destination Development: A landmark initiative to develop selected tourist destinations in partnership with states to ensure world-class facilities and connectivity.

  • ​Unified Payments Interface (UPI): Enables instantaneous, contactless digital payments via QR codes at almost all shops, taxis, and entry gates.
  • ​NIDHI & NIDHI Plus Platforms: A digital gateway that registers and lists hospitality units and travel agents to standardize and verify quality services.

How do I apply for an Indian Tourist Visa?
​Most international travelers can easily apply online for an e-Tourist Visa (e-TV). Applications must be submitted through the official government portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in) between 4 and 30 days before travel. If approved, travelers receive an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) via email, which must be printed and carried.
Are there any restricted areas in India that require special permits?
​Yes. Certain regions (such as parts of Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands) are designated as Protected Areas or Restricted Areas. Foreign tourists will need to apply for a Protected Area Permit (PAP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP) through authorized tour operators or the regional administration.
What is the local currency, and can I use digital payments?
​The currency of India is the Indian Rupee (INR). ​Cards: Major international credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted in cities, hotels, and upscale restaurants. ​UPI: Mobile payment apps (UPI) are the most popular way to pay locally. Some international wallets now allow travelers to link accounts to UPI, and currency exchange kiosks at international airports can assist with setting up pre-paid UPI wallets for international travelers. Carrying some cash in smaller bills is still highly recommended for rural areas or small local vendors.
Can foreign tourists easily get a local SIM card in India?

What are the rules for entering temples or places of worship?
​Footwear: It is mandatory to remove your shoes before entering temples, mosques, gurdwaras, and many historical shrines. ​Attire: Dress modestly. Both men and women should keep their shoulders and knees covered. In Sikh gurdwaras and certain mosques, covering your head with a scarf or bandana is required (usually provided at the entrance if you don't have one).
Are over-the-counter (OTC) medicines readily available?
​Yes, basic over-the-counter medications for headaches, colds, and digestive issues are widely available at local pharmacies ("chemists") without a prescription. However, if you require specific or life-saving chronic medications, carry them with you in their original packaging along with a signed doctor's prescription.
