Velankanni

The title originates from the miraculous healing of the crippled buttermilk vendor in the 16th century. Locally known in Tamil as Arokyia Matha, the icon of Mother Mary at Velankanni is uniquely depicted wearing a traditional Indian saree, holding the infant Jesus. Over centuries, the shrine gained a massive reputation for physical and spiritual healings, cementing its name worldwide.

The grand annual feast takes place over 11 days, starting from August 29 to September 8. September 8 marks the Feast of the Nativity of Mary. During this time, the town hosts over 3 million pilgrims. The festival begins with a massive, solemn flag-hoisting ceremony and features spectacular evening car processions where beautifully decorated chariots carry the statue of Arokyia Matha through the streets.

Velankanni is a beautiful example of cross-cultural and inter-faith harmony. Though it is a Catholic basilica, a vast percentage of daily visitors are Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs. ​Many pilgrims follow traditional Indian rituals out of deep devotion: ​Tonsuring: Shaving one's head as an offering of humility. ​Ear Piercing: Performing traditional infant ear-piercing ceremonies within the complex. ​Walking on Knees: Devotees crawl on their knees along a designated sand path from the Main Basilica to the Holy Path (Nadu Thittu) as a sign of penance or gratitude.

A unique tradition at Velankanni involves donating tiny metal replicas (made of silver, gold, or copper) of human organs, houses, or vehicles. If a person is cured of a heart ailment, they offer a tiny metal heart. If they pray for a house, they offer a miniature metal house. These tokens are dropped into the donation boxes at the shrine as an act of faith and are later displayed in the church museum.
