By strict government safety and environmental regulations, all commercial houseboats must anchor safely by 5:30 PM. This rule is heavily enforced to allow local traditional fishermen to cast their drift nets across the narrow rivers and canals without danger from large boat propellers. The boats remain safely stationary at the riverbank until 8:00 AM the next morning.
