Alleppey Sharing Houseboat

Alleppey Sharing Houseboat

An Alleppey houseboat sharing experience is an excellent, budget-friendly way to cruise the scenic backwaters of Kerala.

Instead of booking a private charter, you reserve one private bedroom with an attached bathroom, while sharing the common lounge, dining area, and sundecks with guests booking the other rooms on the boat. It offers the exact same views and incredible food as a private boat, but at a fraction of the cost.

Infrastructure & Facilities

1. Your Private Cabin (Bedroom)

  • Air Conditioning (A/C): Available in all bedrooms. On Deluxe boats, A/C runs overnight (usually 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM), while Premium boats offer unlimited, daytime A/C.
  • Scenic Windows: Most rooms feature wide glass windows, allowing you to watch the passing backwaters right from your bed.
  • Furnishings: Typically equipped with a comfortable double bed, clean linens, a wardrobe or clothes rack, and a dressing mirror.

2. Attached En-Suite Bathroom

  • Modern Fittings: Western-style flush toilets, sink, and mirror.
  • Shower: Running water, with hot water facilities available either on request or via solar heaters on premium boats.

3. Shared Common Areas

  • Front Lounge & Deck: A comfortable seating area at the front of the boat, ideal for relaxing and enjoying the breeze.
  • Upper / Sun Deck: Many 2-to-3-room sharing houseboats feature an open or semi-covered upper deck, which is perfect for photographing sunsets.
  • Dining Space: A central area with dining tables where all guests on board eat meals together.

4. Food & Dining (All-Inclusive)

The onboard chef prepares fresh, local Kerala-style meals in the kitchen:

  • Welcome: Fresh coconut water or juice on boarding.
  • Lunch: Traditional Kerala meal (boiled rice, sambar, seasonal vegetable dishes, and fresh fish fry and curry ).
  • Evening: Hot tea or coffee served with fresh snacks like banana fritters (Pazham Pori).
  • Dinner: Chappati, rice, dal, chicken curry and fry, and a sweet dessert.
  • Breakfast: Traditional Kerala breakfast (Appam/Idiyappam with curry, or Dosa/Idli) with tea and coffee.

FAQs

Do I have to share my room or bathroom with strangers?
Do I have to share my room or bathroom with strangers? No. You are booking a completely private, lockable bedroom with its own attached bathroom. Only the dining room, lobby, and outer decks are shared with other passengers.
Who controls the cruise route on a shared houseboat?
Shared houseboats run on a standardized, fixed cruise route along the wider, popular waterways of the backwaters (like Vembanad Lake and main canals). Because the boat is shared, it cannot make custom stops or navigate into ultra-narrow village canals on individual requests.
Can my dietary preferences (vegetarian, Jain, allergies) be accommodated?
Yes. However, because the kitchen cooks in batches, you must notify your booking agent or the crew at least 24 hours before boarding. They can easily prepare pure vegetarian or mild-spiced dishes if informed in advance.
What is the typical check-in and check-out schedule?
Check-In: 12:00 PM (noon). The cruise starts shortly after boarding. Evening Halt: By government safety regulations, all houseboats must anchor by 5:30 PM. The boat remains anchored at a scenic lakeside village overnight. Next Morning: The cruise resumes around 7:30 AM or 8:00 AM for a short morning run, ending with check-out around 9:00 AM after breakfast.
Is there power backup on board?
Yes. All professional houseboats are equipped with generator systems to ensure continuous power supply for the lights, fans, and bedroom air-conditioning throughout the night.
